Responding to Student Crises

If you are with a student who is experiencing a crisis know you’re not alone. We have a team of people on campus who are available to respond 24/7. You can remain with the student and call campus security. Campus Security will call a trained responder to come to be with you and the student. If you are concerned for a student’s well-being, do not delay calling. We can respond more effectively when we know in the moment rather than seeking to follow up hours later. If the student begins to walk away from you, please don’t force them to stay. Instead, note where they are heading and give the information to security.

Security can be reached by dialing extension 5190 or calling 863-667-5190.

Below is a helpful resource to determine what support is needed.

The need to request an SOS wellness check may be prompted when a student:

  • Makes statements such as, “I don’t know if I want to live anymore,” or “I don’t want to be here.”
  • Becomes tearful and unable to catch their breath
  • Expressions of agitation such as hitting their head against the wall
  • Presents with a stark decrease in personal hygiene and lacks emotional expression

The need to request an officer for support may be prompted when a student:

  • Makes a direct and targeted threat of violence with an expressed plan is made
  • Expresses a plan to harm themself or someone else and is unwilling to remain withyou
  • Is actively engaging in harm in the immediate moment such as physical violence tosomeone else or self-harm
